Top CEOs Share Their Secret of Maintaining Success: Meditation

Meditation was once believed to be a habit of Buddhist monks, yogis and hippies, but not anymore. Now, the secret is out and meditation has become a buzz-word among top-level executives, as a strategy to stay competitive and successful in the business world.
Many already know that success moguls like Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs have openly claimed that they used mindfulness as part of their everyday practice, and in turn, contributed to achieving their greatness.
Oprah Winfrey recently said about her experience with Transcendental Meditation, “Only from that space can you create your best work and your best life”.
Steve Jobs used Zen mindfulness as a path to his success. Jobs once stated, ” If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there’s room to hear more subtle things-that’s when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more.”

They may be the most well-known CEO’s who have accredited meditation as part of their secret to success, but there are many others that have followed suit.

President and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group,  Arianna Huffington, stated, “Stress-reduction and mindfulness don’t just make us happier and healthier, they’re a proven competitive advantage for any business …The more hectic, the more challenging our lives, the more we need something…meditation… quiet time in our lives when we can…just connect with ourselves.  We all have that place of wisdom, strength, and peace within us…if we can learn to visit it more often…we will truly transform our lives.”  She doesn’t only meditate herself, but is an advocate for mindfulness and offers a weekly mediation class to her employees.

Billionaire, Founder of Bridgewater Associates, Ray Dalio (the world’s largest hedge fund firm on Wall Street) states that, ” Meditation, more than anything in my life was the biggest ingredient of whatever success I’ve had…It opens the mind. It creates an openess, a freedom…that creativity just kind of comes through and it creates an equanimity. In other words, you could step back and could put things in perspective…[It] has given me centeredness and creativity…It’s also given me peace and health”

Founder and CEO of The Energy Project, Tony Schwartz, has been meditating for 20 years. He started meditation to quiet his busy mind, which he wrote about in his book, “What Really Matter:Searching for Wisdom in America”. Schwartz stated, “Maintaining a steady reservoir of energy, physically, mentally, emotionally, even spiritually, requires refueling it intermittently”

These CEO’s have all used meditation as a part of maintaining their competitive edge. They have experienced the benefits of a mindful practice in their business first hand. These benefits helped reduce stress, promoted productivity, and improved cognitive thinking.
